I REALLY, REALLY NEED SOME SUPPORT!!!! I have been married to a farmer/rancher in West Texas for 27 years. We raise beef cattle, which may shock you. But these cattle have the best life possible - free range, no hormones, never any harsh herd cuts (i.e., separation of calves before at least 1 year of age) and it's an all organic operation. All that being said, I opted to go vegetarian at the start of this year. As you can guess, I am being criticized, cruelly taunted & harassed by others in the industry and, yes, by my husband and his family (who have been in cattle ranching for generations). It's not that I disagree with the meat industry: fortunately, in our area, it has been my experience that, in every point in the process, the animals have been dealt with humanely and properly. Perhaps we are the exception here, I don't know. I am aware that, in most places, especially urban areas, the meat processing plants are abhorrent in their practices. But here, the livestock & agriculture are our biggest commodities: people certainly would not get very far if we dealt with them poorly, treated them abusively or managed them improperly. Profits would go down. In my own personal case, I spent years managing our own ranch during the years I had young children at home (I am a teacher but opted to stay home during those years - I loved being with my children & also, working outdoors with the animals, living every day on the prairie and experiencing God's glory first hand. Spectacular!!) But that doesn't change the fact that, now, I AM DIFFERENT. I am "VEGETARIAN", which is as close to a non-patriotic curse word there is around here. So I truly need any support & encouragement and help available here! I want to continue on my quest to find a healthier way of life, no matter what the cost. Even if it means giving up what I have here. I mean it. I am tired of cow-towing to what others demand; it's time I lived for ME.

When somebody makes the decision to break free and strike out on their own against the odds, they rise in my estimation. And the three quotes on your page, entwined with your own words, suit you. It’s akin to listening to a silent stream in a state of flux. I’m all ears and I want to hear more about your journey. May you always have the courage of your convictions, Melinda.
