Oops, not posted on this group in a while! How is everyone getting on out in their gardens? We're harvesting loads of stuff at the moment... Broccoli, broad beans, peas, runner beans, kale, cabbage, potatoes, soft fruit (strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and red, black and white currants). Onions and garlic aren't doing so well but they're in new beds so the fertility isn't great.

I get such a good feeling eating fruit and veg straight from the garden :D

I have some property in Florida with a dozen fruit trees. I visit a few times a year from New York City. My mom and a gardener take care of the basics.

I actually started eating whole foods before I stopped eating meat. I do believe that we should save our seeds as way of giving back to the earth what we are taking. My first patio garden started this year. They grew, but did not vear any fruit so far :( Any tips for someone trying to garden in the desert?

Hi Dara, what did you try to grow? If there are gardening groups/websites for your part of the world you should be able to find lists of plants and techniques suitable for your climate.

There's quite a lot of information about gardening in the desert. Greening the Desert on Youtube is interesting and there's forums on the subject at

Thanks Sam. I tried to grow different plants mostly from the seeds of the organic produce I buy from the farmers market. Right now I have tomatoes, cantaloupe, lettuce, pumpkin, cucumber, and indoors I am growing two avocado trees. Oh yeah, and a watermelon that seems to be on steroids. It wont stop growing, lol., Still, no fruit growing.

When did you plant the seeds? That will obviously have an effect on when they flower and fruit. If veg seeds are sown too late in the UK we tend not to have a yield as it gets too clod in winter; you might not have the same issue where you are.

Are you aware that seeds saved from produce might not breed true?
