Is eating in a restaurant that serves meat still funding the meat industry and factory farming cruelty?

I have always taken the attitude of 'supply and demand'....that if you don't physically hand over money for a meat dish then you are doing your bit to slow the demand for meat and therefore the demand for cruel and inhumane and senseless factory farming.  So when I have a craving for (organic, free-range) meat, eating a bit off the plate of someone else who has already paid for the meal, doesn't make me feel that guilty as I justify it with not having paid for the meal myself and thus am not funding the industry! As twisted and nonsensical as it may sound....that's how I roll lol. But my question is, simply by eating in a restaurant that serves meat, even if I eat the veg food only, am I continuing to fund the meat industry anyway by adding to the overall profit of the restaurant?? This thought disturbs me! But then it's hard to only eat in vegan/veg cafes all the time especially when socialising. Any other thoughts on this one?

No, you are not funding the factory farms or the meat industry when you order a vegetarian/vegan dish in a restaurant serving meat. You are instead creating a demand for the vegan products. The more the people who ask for veg options, the more you are creating a space for them. Look at how we have vegan options at Subway, McDonalds, KFC never mind the junk they serve. And, imagine if these products were never asked for? They would be simply taken off the menu and what good would that do to anyone!? I, infact say, go to a majorly non veggie place, ask for vegan options, though you know there aren't going to be any and then walk out of the place. Let it be known that change is coming and if they are slow to adapt to the change, they are going to be in for a loss. The important thing to do is to make the vegan/vegetarian food mainstream. Ask, ask, ask for them in all places.

That said, no meat is free range or organic. All meat is produced from suffering and slaughtering of animals. Don't fool yourself with the labels. Please understand that labels of free range, organic, grass fed exist only to make us feel good about consuming animals. They don't do the animals any good. So when you eat meat from the plate of another who has paid for that so called organic meat, you are indeed a part of that cycle of suffering. How will you ever get off the habit of eating meat while you still crave for it. Having an ethical position on the eating of meat, means not eating it all, no matter what the labels are. You are only answerable to yourself. Be true to yourself.
