It all started a year ago, I was sitting in my living room listening to a friend talk about being a vegan. I thought to myself, “I could become a vegan if I didn’t love cheese so much”. I began asking questions about why dairy and eggs where harmful to animals. At the time I was unknowingly naive about the food industry and factory farming. I thought I knew a lot considering I was a vegetarian, but I was wrong. Throughout the last year I began watching documentaries, going to events, and tried soaking up as much knowledge as I could. I joined Vegfriend and started to realize that eating dairy and eggs caused a lot of problems economically, environmentally, and health wise. Knowing all this information I knew there was something that had to be done. It’s not enough to have the information, you have to be willing to do something with it. That’s when I decided to start off on my vegan adventure. I talked about it with friends and family and there was one question that everyone asked: You’re going to give up cheese? Maybe people were right, maybe becoming a vegan was going to be impossible. I was soon doubting my ability and decided that if I could make it even one day it would be a miracle. Sunday rolled around and I went to my local grocery store. I was there for what seemed like hours. Everything I normally bought didn’t fit a vegan lifestyle. I decided that the easiest vegan breakfast would be smoothies. Knowing that I was going to need a little extra protein I decided to get both greens and fruit. About a half hour later I was ready to leave with basically nothing. The next morning I woke up and made a smoothie that looked like grass. I almost cried- how on earth was I going to be able to do this when the first meal I’m eating looks like death. I eventually drank it …every day for an entire week. By the end of the week I was beginning to look forward to my grassy death smoothie. (Can you tell that I wasn’t raised on vegetables?) I began to realize that by no longer eating dairy I was also cutting out a lot of other food groups. The biggest change was no longer wanting bread and pasta. I use to cover both in cheese and now that I wasn’t consuming dairy I didn’t want them. I began filling the void with fruits and vegetables and noticed a difference in my energy, sleep pattern, and weight. Normally I would be sluggish and have issues getting my day started; now I was going to sleep earlier and waking up feeling ready for the day. Since becoming a vegan I have also lost 7 pounds. I realized that becoming a vegan is not easy, but it’s also not impossible. If you’re committed and open to new ideas you can do anything you want. I’m going to take the vegan lifestyle one day at a time and hopefully one day it will become like second nature to me.
